Settings Optimization and Validation
January - June 2024
Formlabs - Settings Optimization Intern
At Formlabs, I had the opportunity to work on the Settings Optimization Team, where I tested material settings for a variety of resins on cutting-edge SLA 3D printers to ensure consistent print performance and customer satisfaction. Leading up to the launch of the Form 4 and Form 4L printers, my role involved contributing to the ongoing development of these settings, as well as collaborating on projects with the print process team and test team to improve printer reliability and performance.
I conducted comprehensive tests on printers and resins, recording data and analyzing print failures. This required prioritizing and organizing multiple material validations, effective communication when issues arose, and coordinating with the team to troubleshoot failures. By the end of my internship, I had contributed to over 20 material settings, representing more than 70% of in-field customer print usage.
Furthermore, I also helped validate various surface roughnesses for their new Build Platform Flex, compared print performance across alternative LCD manufacturers, and assisted in maintaining the fleet of 100+ printers used throughout the Somerville office.
This internship allowed me to refine my time management, organization, and communication skills while improving my data-driven problem-solving abilities. I also discovered a passion for seeing my work’s impact translate directly to customer experiences, and the company’s culture of emphasizing ownership and pride in one’s work solidified my enthusiasm for pursuing a career with those values.
